Measurements

The problem of a choice of measurements is the major and most difficult problem of identification of blood circulation system [9], [25]. For the decision of this problem we need the answers to the following questions.

What to measure?
What are the physiological variables are available for measurement and for any of them exist the line in the model structure [26]. The degree of detail of the mathematical model is a major limiting factor in the choice of measurement parameters.

When to measure?
The answer to this question implies definition of a time interval or the time moments of measurement of physiological curves. From practical considerations it is possible to take one cardiac cycle as an interval of measurements. In our model the beginning of the cardiac cycle coincides with the beginning of the ventricular systole. Some measurable values are fixed not continuously, but only in some time moments when the values run up to their minimums and maximums, for example systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, end-systolic and end-diastolic ventricular volumes.

How to measure?
There are various methods for measuring physiological variables. The most significant features of these methods, we have identified [25] as measuring paradigm.

Find the answer to the questions leads to the notion of measuring system. The problem of the choice of measurements on models of large circulation was seen earlier in Chapter 4 of [9] in the production and meet the challenges of observability and identifiability. In the most complete and finished form of the choice of measurement system studied in our paper [25].
