The parameter describes mitral insufficiency leading to blood regurgitation from the left ventricle to the left atrium and pulmonary vein in diastolic phase. This pathology is named "mitral valve failure".

The second part of the formula describes the process of blood regurgitation through aortic valve in diastolic phase in case of valvular locking defect (0 < r_VRHL< 0.3). In its normal state r_VRHL takes on the value 0.
